Meet the Team: Tiesha Mathis, HR Generalist

Updated: Oct 29

Once in a while, you meet someone who is so brimming with confidence that you just assume they’re the boss.

This describes Tiesha to a T – and yes, this did happen when we were at a summit not long ago!

It makes sense since a favorite motto of hers is:

"Confidence always speaks."

Tiesha definitely walks this walk in spades – but it’s not a type of charisma based on bossing people around or always knowing the answer or hobnobbing with the right people.

Hers is a mature confidence that really does speak for itself. She walks with her head held high and a warm smile. She’s a genuinely supportive person who sees people for who they are in their souls: people.

And if you are lucky enough to be in her orbit, she’ll make sure you feel like you belong. Whether you are a candidate who just bombed an interview or a CEO seeking counsel for your next new hire, Tiesha has your back.

That is her superpower.

Tiesha is really a ray of light for our team! She is always willing to help and has become an awesome Recruiter managing her own projects. She has a way of making clients and candidates feel comfortable. She loves her family and traveling as well as a good joke!  ~ Meagan

Tiesha’s Journey to HR Consulting

Tiesha came to Slice in October 2022, (and OneDigital in February 2024) with less than 6 months of HR experience under her belt. Her drive and willingness to grow and learn have elevated her well beyond her years of experience. She has taken an SHRM – SCP prep class twice and is studying for her certification in HR.

This knowledge coupled with the fast-paced learning that comes with working in HR Consulting has led Tiesha to not only manage many projects in the space of Talent Acquisition and Organizational Diagnosis but become a resident expert instrumental in collaborating and promoting growth.

Tiesha is a delight to work with. She's known for her sense of humor, positivity, and hardworking nature. She has a remarkable ability to connect with anyone and make it feel like you’ve known her for years. I always enjoy partnering with her – we share plenty of laughs, making even the most challenging projects enjoyable. Tiesha truly brings a special energy to the team. ~ Emily

Interview With Tiesha

Tiesha's persistence has been paying off since before day one, when she decided she was getting the job and applied on LinkedIn. When we asked how she originally connected with A Slice of HR, she said, "I emailed Colleen, and wouldn’t take no for an answer."

That's how you make things happen!

Check out some of the insightful answers Tiesha brings to the table in this interview.

What made you decide to go into HR?

While I have a unique background, one constant has always been my desire to serve others. I began my career in call centers during college, which led to an administrative role where I was introduced to recruiting. I quickly developed a passion for recruiting, enjoying the interaction with people and the opportunity to make a difference. This experience opened the pathway to Human Resources (HR) for me. After further research, I realized that HR was an industry where I could make a significant impact and truly enjoy my daily work. The variety and versatility of HR are essential aspects of my motivation and purpose.

What’s your favorite part of your work?

When I can solve a problem for someone else (client or candidate) and it leaves them feeling like another task was lifted off their shoulders. It feels good to be an asset and valued by the individuals you collaborate with.

What’s one of the most common client questions/issues you face, and how do you go about solving the problem?

I am primarily involved in the day-to-day operations of recruiting, so my experience can vary.

One common problem we solve for clients is: How do we attract quality talent and how do we retain that quality talent? At this point, HR and recruiting become intertwined. As consultants, we offer assessments and analyses to thoroughly evaluate the culture and environment of workplaces. Additionally, we ensure we are realistic about what employees truly want now and what they look forward to in the future. We provide this feedback to clients and follow up with suggestions for implementation moving forward. This creates a “now and later” solution process that clients can utilize timelessly.

What do you like to do in your downtime?

I’m a very creative person so in this season anything that allows a release to be creative has been great for me. I love live bands and music so that is my primary go-to.

What makes you good at HR?

My care and dedication to provide value to others.

How do you see HR evolving in the future?

I believe HR is evolving into a space that emphasizes enhanced communication and the implementation of technology to increase efficiency. There are many stereotypes attached to HR, but I think HR professionals are changing the narrative. We are demonstrating the value we add to companies beyond compliance, showcasing the care and dedication we have for both the companies and the employees.

Most importantly, we have a genuine desire to serve others, which is not an easy task given the constant interactions. HR is truly a cycle of valuable insights and ideas that keep the flow and connection between employers and employees evolving, as we are the primary liaison.

Looking ahead, the future of HR will focus on creating more meaningful and impactful relationships within organizations. This means moving towards a more trust-based and empowering approach, rather than just focusing on compliance. We’ll see more digital tools and technologies being used to streamline processes and provide better insights. HR will also play a key role in promoting sustainability and social responsibility within companies. These changes will help HR professionals continue to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing business landscape.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A fashion designer – oddly enough, I still made that dream come true in another capacity, and I’m very proud of myself.

What do you see as your strongest skill(set)or attribute that you use regularly as an HR consultant?

The ability to understand and have patience.

What is the best piece of HR advice you've ever received?

“You are the expert. If you doubt your abilities and expertise, so will everyone else.”
